Discover Limerick city’s Medieval Quarter and its 800 years of history…

The Medieval Quarter of Limerick is located in the King’s Island section of the city, originally known as Englishtown, and in the Abbey River area, originally known as Irishtown. The Medieval Quarter’s main attractions include King John’s Castle, the Hunt Museum, the Treaty Stone and St. Mary’s Cathedral, the City’s Town Hall of 1449, and the present City Hall which retains the façade of an old jail. Other attractions include a long riverside promenade and medieval streetscapes. Castle Lane beside King John’s Castle includes a reconstruction of some medieval buildings including a granary, labourer’s cottage and gabled houses.

King John’s Castle is a 13th century Norman castle on ‘King’s Island’ in the heart of medieval Limerick. The walls, towers and fortifications still remain today. The remains of a Viking settlement was also uncovered during the construction of the visitor centre at the site. The castle boasts impressive views overlooking the beautiful River Shannon. A tour of the castle will allow you to experience what life was like back in Norman times through the imaginative historical exhibition, excavated pre-Norman houses, fortifications, siege mines, and the battlement walks. King John who was “Lord of Ireland” minted his own coins and the Royal moneyer would have struck the coins in the castle mint. Enjoy the real atmosphere of the era in this impressive castle.

Limerick’s Hunt Museum is another must-see attraction which exhibits one of Ireland's greatest private collections of art and antiquities, dating from the Neolithic to the 20th Century, including works by Renoir, Yeats and Picasso. Limerick’s Treaty Stone marks the treaty of Limerick which concluded the Siege of Limerick. The treaty consisted of two treaties which were signed on 3 October 1691 and put on the Treaty Stone, an irregular block of limestone which once served as a mounting block for horses. St. Mary's Cathedral, founded in 1168, is the oldest building in Limerick and was built on an earlier castle belonging to the King of Munster. Surrounded by an old graveyard, this cathedral is hauntingly impressive.
