Discover Limerick city’s Medieval Quarter and its 800 years of history…

The Medieval Quarter of Limerick is located in the King’s Island section of the city, originally known as Englishtown, and in the Abbey River area, originally known as Irishtown. The Medieval Quarter’s main attractions include King John’s Castle, the Hunt Museum, the Treaty Stone and St. Mary’s Cathedral, the City’s Town Hall of 1449, and the present City Hall which retains the façade of an old jail. Other attractions include a long riverside promenade and medieval streetscapes. Castle Lane beside King John’s Castle includes a reconstruction of some medieval buildings including a granary, labourer’s cottage and gabled houses. King John’s Castle is a 13th century Norman castle on ‘King’s Island’ in the heart of medieval Limerick. The walls, towers and fortifications still remain today.
